An excimer laser therapy can be used
to correct different kinds of visual defects.
Treatment of near-sightedness, PRK method:
With this method, a computer-controlled laser beam causes an exactly programmed
flattening of the sensitive cornea. Extremely thin layers of tissue are treated
with a precision of several thousands of a millimeter. This means that the
surface of the cornea is changed without causing scars and without damaging
the underlying tissue. So, near-sighted, far-sighted and astigmatic
eyes can (re)gain their normal optical refraction. The patient's
power of vision often improves after such an operation. The results of such
a treatment are also therapeutic.
Treatment does not cause any pain and lasts only a few minutes.
It is carried out on an out-patient basis and anaesthetizing eye drops are
used.
